Age: 12

Age at T1D diagnosis: 7

Diagnosed with T1D at the age of 7 in March 2021, Melaina has faced her condition with remarkable strength. Her nurse helped her gain confidence and control over her diagnosis, enabling her to start giving herself shots and finger sticks from the very beginning. Melaina began advocating on Instagram to help navigate her new reality, becoming a powerful example of resilience. As a Breakthrough T1D Junior Ambassador for the past 2 years, she continues to inspire others and is excited to keep advocating for support and awareness for those affected by T1D.

Melaina is an exceptional student who has been part of the Spanish immersion program since second grade. Alongside her academic achievements, she is a dedicated lacrosse player and runner.  Fortunately, she has a CGM and insulin pump, which help manage her T1D and make participating in competitive sports easier.

In addition to athletics, Melaina plays bass in her orchestra. She thrives on challenges and strives to excel in everything she does, and she dreams of becoming a surgeon one day.
