Type 1 diabetes has influenced Anna’s career dreams. “Before I was diagnosed with type I diabetes, I wanted to be a teacher,” she says. “Now that I have become educated about T1D, I would like to be a doctor so I can both educate children regarding their disease as well as help them manage their disease.” An accomplished Girl Scout, honor student and athlete, Anna is also a T1D advocate. She participates in the JDRF Walk each year with her basketball team and her brothers’ baseball teams, attends a summer camp for kids with T1D and volunteers as a Junior Ambassador at her chapter’s yearly JDRF Gala. T1D is “particularly heart–wrenching because it affects children and young people. This is a healthcare crisis which takes its toll financially, physically and emotionally on our nation,” she explains.
