Avery remembers closing her eyes whenever her dad checked his blood sugar; she worried that it hurt him to test. He was diagnosed with diabetes at age 13, and his twin brother was diagnosed a few years later. The Green family was already participating in JDRF Walks when Avery was born. They didn't know then that Avery would soon be diagnosed (at age three) and would have to go through the same routine as her dad. Now, Avery's a JDRF Youth Ambassador, educating as many people as she can about diabetes. Avery wants people to understand that, although she pricks her fingers, she still loves to polish her nails, and although she might take breaks between softball innings, she gets the same thrill of hitting a home run as her teammates do. Avery enjoys soccer, softball, cheerleading, swimming, and drawing. She wants to one day help animals as a veterinarian.
