In addition to volunteering with her local JDRF office and raising an impressive $50,000 through JDRF Walks, Berkeley worked as a teen counselor at a diabetes camp, participated in the TypeOneNation Summit, and, for her Girl Scouts Silver Award project, created a YouTube video and booklet explaining T1D. Berkeley’s dream is to become a surgeon. “Being a surgeon seems like a hard thing to do as a diabetic,” she explains. “Surgeries can take a long time and with my diabetes, I have to be able to check my blood and have food when I need it, which is something surgeons can’t usually do.” She remains hopeful. “If there is a cure for diabetes, I won’t have to worry about not being able to do my dream job.”
