Having TID can be scary. But, as Brooklynn says, “It’s how you deal with that fear that defines you. In my case, I turned it into a source for empowerment. I use it to give me the courage to speak up about diabetes awareness and continue in patient advocacy.” To that end, Brooklynn raises money for JDRF (from participating in the JDRF Walks to selling lemonade and cookies at local events), has appeared in TV and radio interviews, and has spoken as a patient advocate with Kevin D’Amour, Ph.D., a research scientist. In addition to her many advocacy efforts, Brooklynn also loves playing softball, learning about science, especially physics, and painting. She hopes to work in the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI when she grows up.
