Bryce’s dreams are taking flight. As a member of Civil Air Patrol, a nonprofit associated with the U.S. Air Force that helps with disaster relief and homeland security, Bryce has earned the rank of senior airman. Like other kids living with T1D, he hopes for new technological treatments for the disease, but he also imagines fulfilling his own goals, too. “When I grow up, I want to be either a white hat hacker or an engineer,” he explains. “A white hat hacker hacks to help companies that hire them. They hack and then shore up the defenses so that other hackers can’t use the same trick they did to get into the companies’ information.” In the meantime, he stays busy sharing information—and hope—about T1D.
