According to her mother, "Emilie's biggest interest at this point in life is people. She is truly a people person and can hold a true conversation with just about anyone." Diagnosed at 17 months old, Emilie has known diabetes for most of her life, and doesn't view herself as different from other children. She is engaged with life and other people, and enjoys staying active. She likes gymnastics, reading, and learning about letters and numbers. Emilie's family is very involved with JDRF. They participate in annual Walks, and her mother serves as Outreach Committee Chairperson for the Rhode Island Branch. Emilie's mother points out that, given the amount of recent scientific progress, funding for continued diabetes research is essential. The Gordons want to put another face on type 1 and raise awareness.
