Though people with type 1 are currently restricted from obtaining a commercial pilot's license, Jay isn't letting that stop him from pursuing his dream. He started a group called "Pilots with Diabetes" to rally for people with type 1 to be allowed to pilot commercial planes, and he's logged three and a half in-flight hours on the way to becoming a registered private pilot. Diagnosed at age six, Jay's combined his piloting passion with his advocacy work with JDRF. He wrote a book, "Flying on Insulin," about piloting with diabetes, which has raised $200. Jay also started a website to connect children with diabetes in West Virginia, spoke on live radio and in front of his entire school about diabetes, and helped raise $15,000 with his Walk team, "The Jay Walkers." His wants to present a positive outlook on diabetes to Congress, and help them understand the difference they can make.
