Age: 15
Age at T1D diagnosis: 8

Matthew is an avid history buff and sports enthusiast who threw out the first pitch at a New York Mets baseball game. He currently studies drama at the prestigious Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in New York City. Matthew was diagnosed with T1D while on vacation, just four days before his 9th birthday. Matthew lives by the motto, “I have T1D, but T1D doesn’t have me.”

Matthew speaks openly about his diagnosis, educating his peers and teachers, and advocates to ensure his schools recognize National Diabetes Day. He knows what a devastating diagnosis of T1D can be. At 13, for his Mitzvah (good deed) Project in honor of his Bar Mitzvah, Matthew raised more than $2,000 and created care packages for newly diagnosed children. Living with T1D has had its challenges, but it has not stopped him from pursuing his passions and living his life to the fullest.
