Nick is good with numbers. Now in his eighth year of having T1D, he calculates that he’s undergone about 70,080 hours living with the disease, 17,520 insulin injections, 96 pharmacy trips and 32 endocrinologist visits. Yet these figures don’t reveal the true depth of Nick’s life. An active public speaker, he has spoken in front of crowds ranging from 3 to 3,000, even addressing the JDRF Walk in Boca Raton. He has taught himself to play an unusual wind instrument called the ocarina, which “looks like a sweet potato, and sounds like a flute.” As for living with T1D, he reflects, “I wouldn’t change a thing about my life. Having diabetes makes me unique. Of course, I want a cure. But I’m going to be okay.”
