“Diabetes has thrown me some challenges over the last ten years,” says Olivia. “But my parents have always taught me that I can do anything that someone without diabetes can do, it just takes more thought and planning.” Olivia is well on her way to doing anything and everything she puts her mind to, from volleyball (she earned her team’s Most Valuable Player award) and ski racing to reading (she’s met Percy Jackson series author Rick Riordan), learning about chemical engineering, and participating in her local JDRF Walk with her family and other supporters. “My family and I don’t let my diabetes get in the way of anything we want to do. Diabetes may be a crucial part of our lives, but it doesn’t control us or define me,” says Olivia.
