Sara is thankful for the support from family and others who have helped her continue to live an active life since her diagnosis at age 11 – from cross-country coaches carrying supplies on runs, to soccer teammates looking out for her. A stellar student, Sara received the Chase Youth Award for personal achievement in 2010, and has been both Girl of the Year and Student of the Month at her middle school. She also earned the school record in long jump. Sara wants to earn a medical degree and work with children who have type 1. She has been a JDRF Youth Ambassador, spoken at fundraisers, served on a medical conference panel about type 1, and met with Congressional leaders three times with the Promise to Remember Me Campaign. Sara encourages Congress to raise awareness of the need for funding, and wants to connect with others who have type 1.
