Sofia is a 13-year-old 7th grader. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just days before Thanksgiving in 2022, making meal planning a bit trickier. Since those initial difficulties, Sofia has worked hard to master managing her diabetes. She is passionate about advocating not only for herself but for everyone in the T1D community. This is her second year as a Youth Ambassador for Breakthrough T1D, and she loves inviting friends and family to participate with her in the annual Breakthrough T1D Walk.

The granddaughter of Salvadoran immigrants, Sofia loves music, history, reading, and spending time with friends. She excels in school and socializing and is a supportive sister and loving daughter. Sofia has been enrolled in a dual language immersion program since first grade and speaks, reads, and writes Mandarin Chinese. She hopes to pursue a career in either law or medicine and plans to run for the United States Senate someday.
